Location

Vadhvan Port is located at Vadhvan Point near Dahanu in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, positioned along India’s vibrant western coastline on the Arabian Sea. Set just south of the Maharashtra–Gujarat maritime boundary, the site offers exceptional natural depth close to the shore, enabling the port to handle some of the world’s largest container vessels with minimal dredging.

The port is planned on an offshore artificial island designed to maximise navigational safety while minimising impact on the coastline. Its proximity to major national highways, the Mumbai–Surat rail corridor, and upcoming freight and logistics infrastructure positions Vadhvan Port as a crucial gateway for international trade.

Road Access

  • Vadhvan is just 140 kilometers from Mumbai, 150 kilometers north to JNPA, 180 kilometers south to Surat and 160 kilometers west to Nashik.
  • The port is only 12 kilometers away from the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Freight Corridor.
  • 34 kilometres away from Delhi-Mumbai National Highway (NH-8)
  • 22 kilometres from Mumbai-Baroda Express Highway.
  • The national railway grid is also just 10 kilometers from the port.
  • Dedicated road & rail to the port as there will be no direct interference in the village.

Rail Access

The rail connectivity component of the Vadhvan Port Project is being planned in coordination with the Ministry of Railways and Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) to ensure efficient movement of cargo by rail. A dedicated rail line will connect the port to the existing Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) through a new rail spur line and logistics hub near Boisar or Palghar region.

This linkage will provide seamless access to the Northern and Western hinterlands, significantly reducing logistic costs and enhancing trade efficiency. The rail alignment will include provisions for double stacking of containers, modern signaling systems, and sufficient loop lines to handle high cargo volumes.

Integrated Connectivity Vision

The combined road and rail connectivity plans are designed to make Vadhvan Port a truly multimodal logistics hub. The integration of these networks will help in:

  • Enhancing port efficiency and turnaround time.

  • Reducing logistics costs for EXIM trade.

  • Promoting regional development by improving access to industries and economic zones.

  • Supporting the Government of India’s Sagarmala and Gati Shakti initiatives aimed at holistic infrastructure development.

Through this robust connectivity framework, Vadhvan Port will not only cater to the growing cargo demand but will also play a pivotal role in positioning India as a global maritime and logistics powerhouse.

Mumbai’s Edge

Vadhvan Port enjoys a strategic advantage due to its proximity to Mumbai, India’s premier financial and maritime hub. Located approximately 150 kilometers north of Mumbai, along the same western coastline of the Arabian Sea, Vadhvan Port is positioned to complement the existing port infrastructure of the region, including Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Mumbai port Authority.

The project leverages Mumbai’s established logistics ecosystem, skilled workforce, and connectivity network to enhance trade efficiency along India’s west coast. The planned road and rail corridors will seamlessly link Vadhvan Port with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), ensuring swift movement of cargo to industrial zones, logistics parks, and consumption centers.

Sharing the same maritime edge as Mumbai, the port is designed to handle large vessels that are currently constrained by the draft limitations at Mumbai’s existing ports. This deep-draft advantage, combined with modern port facilities, will help decongest Mumbai’s port traffic and create a synergistic maritime network between JNPA and Vadhvan Port.
